(Thousand Oaks, CA) Pete Turpel, former founder and owner of Phone On-Hold Marketing Systems, sold his very successful 30-year-old company last year and recently launched a new venture called FifthScent. FifthScent is a premier sensory branding organization that helps other businesses improve customer experiences, while enhancing sales, all through the power of scents.
Turpel, one of the pioneers in the phone on-hold marketing industry, is now taking the lead in the aroma marketing industry and exclusively offers his virtually unlimited array of standard and custom scents to companies throughout the country. He notes, “Researchers and savvy marketers have understood the impact of scents for many years. Customers in scented locations tend to remain longer and revisit more often. Aromas don’t make someone buy, but they do make the shopping experience more pleasant and memorable.”
He says scent marketing has almost unlimited application for any type of business. “Hotels, casinos, grocery stores, car dealerships, banks, jewelers, spas, health/fitness clubs, clothing stores, malls, airports, sports stadiums, apartment complexes, hospitals, nursing homes, fashion shows, and just about any other kind of enterprise can treat their customers to a wonderful experience,” he states. “Scent marketing is a unique and effective means of breaking through to the consumers’ sense of smell, stimulating their olfactory nerves, creating a comfortable ambiance and making a lasting impression on them.”
Scent marketing is already successfully used in many countries and is breaking into such well-known companies as Mercedes, General Motors, Honda, Abercrombie & Fitch, Pierre Cardin, LensCrafters, Goodwill Industries, Hugo Boss, Pandora Jewelers, and many others. Turpel is quick to add, “You don’t have to have a high-end product or offer upper-crust service to reap scent marketing benefits. The cost is very reasonable and can run as little as $100 a month, but still has a huge impact on customers and a company’s bottom line.”
He adds that scenting technology has come a long way in recent years. He says, “We use a micro particle, dry distribution system that produces the soothing fragrances. As an added benefit, all scents are hypoallergenic, so they can be used with confidence in any environment.”
Turpel has a long history of developing businesses, some from scratch. Prior to FifthScent, he started Phone On-Hold in 1984. Previously, he had a very productive career in broadcasting and voice over work and, from 1975 to 1992, he was a radio broadcaster and general manager for Thousand Oaks stations KNJO and KMDY.
Turpel has also been active in his local communities. In 2010, he chaired the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce, which serves over 1,500 businesses. For seven years, he was on the Conejo Valley Unified School District Advisory Council. He has also held leadership positions within the Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks, Boy Scouts of America in Ventura County, and took on multiple roles in support of Conejo Valley Days. He also found time to become a member of the Conejo Future Foundation and trustee of the Conejo Valley Historical Society.
